Scope, Activities and Summary Results
|
|
Scope:
- To improve hygiene behavior and practices
- To promote community-led total sanitation
- To increase coverage of safe water supply services
- To train and capacity of Government of Union Parishads and non-government stakeholders.

Activities:
- Assist Union Parishads in selection and engagement of project staff. Provide needs-based training, orientation and capacity building support to the concerned UPs, Union/ Ward WatSan Committees / Communities, and other stakeholders on planning and implementation of hygiene education activities to facilitate the CLTS approach.
- Recruit and train Community Facilitators on WatSan; undertake baseline and community surveys using PRA; identification of needs and planning for hardware and software.
- Assist UP to appraise community WSS situations, prepare plans and programs. Prepare a consolidated-UP program incorporating all the community programs in the Union and forward them to Upazila WatSan Committee for validation with SAE of DPHE being the focal person.
- Development and Printing of IEC/BCC materials; TOT to the facilitators
- Conduct a series of motivational sessions (individual & group) among communities on hygiene promotion by UP project staff.
- Sanitation marketing involving local entrepreneurs. Demonstration of hygienic latrine at Union Parishad premises with contact information of LEs.
- Finance UP programs in sanitation and safe water supply options, tube wells and piped water supply systems in rural and peri- urban areas.
- Conduct awareness-raising sessions for proper operation, maintenance and protection of water systems by UP project staff and volunteers.
- Establish systems for collecting user charges to ensure proper operation and maintenance of water supply systems.
- Showed live drama with functional messages related to sanitation at public places;

Summary results:
The project was implemented in 40 unions in Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira districts. The project reached about 400,000 people, of which more than 80,000 were extreme poor and about 200,000 were women.
- 250,000 people were directly benefited from water and sanitation related infrastructure through about 6,200 water points including 38 pipeline water supply systems in 40 unions
- About 400,000 people, including children, has received hygiene education
- About 1600 community forums and WatSan user groups was activated to operate and maintain infrastructure.
