Scope, Activities and Summary Results
|
|
Scope:
The overall objective of the HYSAWA Project is to develop and demonstrate sustainable hygiene, sanitation and water supply service delivery through local government institutions in consultation with local people. The immediate objectives are:
- To improve hygiene behavior/practices
- To promote community-led total sanitation
- To increase coverage of safe water supply services
- To strengthen the capacity of Government, Local Government Institutions (LGIs) and non-government stakeholders at all levels to play the roles required to achieve the above three immediate objectives
- To promote greater devolution of administrative and financial authority to local government institutions in regard to hygiene, sanitation and water supply.

Activities:
- Training for local government functionaries (particularly to UPs), Training for community organizers (COs) engaged to provide WASH services to HHs level & communities;
- Identified community volunteers and oriented them on how WASH services could be expanded around the communities for achieving the 100% sanitation coverage and promotion of hygiene behavior;
- Performed situation analysis and need assessment and established baseline using PRA methods and tools;
- Facilitated series of awareness sessions using proven IEC/BCC materials, demonstration, CLTS.
- Conduct a series of motivational sessions (individual & group) among communities on hygiene promotion by UP project staff.
- Installed school latrine in consultation with school management committees (SMCs) and public latrines in consultation with concerned UPs;
- Showed popular UNICEF Meena and other educational videos at community level and schools/institutions;
- Showed live drama with functional messages related to sanitation at public places;
- Moreover, regular coordination, communication, follow up, facilitation of workshops, meeting, case and facts presentation associated to achieve the success where funding agency/donors expressed their full satisfaction.
- Development and Printing of IEC/BCC materials; TOT to the facilitators
- Sanitation marketing involving local entrepreneurs. Demonstration of hygienic latrine at Union Parishad premises with contact information of LEs.

Summary results:
- Capacity development support and funding 600 Union Parishads, involvement of Upazila WatSan Committees through 5 sub-contracted organizations;
- Training to 6500 Local Government functionaries
- Formation of 14000 Community groups for local level project planning, implementation and monitoring
- Financed 27,000 water points, 650 Public latrines and
- 750,000 household latrines by the community
- More than 3.0 million people received practical training on different components of hygiene;
