Hygiene Promotion

Improve hygiene behaviour /practices

Hygienic behavior and a hygienic way of life is one of prime ways of preventing water-borne diseases. Research has shown that hand washing alone can prevent about 40% of the diarrheal diseases. With this aim in target, HYSAWA have designed their hygiene promotion programme in such a way that it is inclusive of all the hygienic practices for an individual as well as for a community.

Partner NGOs are engaged by the respective UPs using PPR. In areas where there is unavailability of NGO in HYSAWA’s criteria, direct UP staff are identified through written exams. PNGO/UP staff support the communities in hygiene, sanitation and water supply related activities. Community Development Forums (CDFs) are formed to identify community needs and plan for improvement. Posters on ‘hand washing’ are reprinted by HYSAWA and used for practical demonstrations at the community level. PNGO/UP staff members are trained on hygiene promotion, CLTS, and PRA methods of planning and monitoring.

The UPs through the PNGO/UP staff engage volunteers (50% female), train them on motivational issues related to hygiene promotion and sanitation. Practical training on hand washing, food and waste disposal, hygiene sanitation and water safety plan are provide. Caretakers of tube-wells receive training on water safety including collection, preservation and consumption aspects of water safety. Practical sessions and behavioural changes are emphasized as opposed to one-way hygiene education.
