Scope, Activities and Summary Results

Scope:

 The project was implemented in 70 unions in southern parts of Bangladesh mostly in hard-to-reach areas. The objectives were: 
 • Strengthen the Local government institutions’ capacity for sustainable service delivery in water supply and sanitation within the nationally agreed framework;
 • Improve the hygiene behavior, access to hygienic sanitation and safe drinking water;
 • Inform policy-makers the lessons learned from this project to improve policy framework and

Activities:

  • Training for local government functionaries (particularly to UPs), Training for community organizers (COs) engaged to provide WASH services to HHs level & communities;
  • Identified community volunteers and oriented them on how WASH services could be expanded around the communities for achieving the 100% sanitation coverage and promotion of hygiene behavior;
  • Performed situation analysis and need assessment and established baseline using PRA methods and tools;
  • Facilitated series of awareness sessions using proven IEC/BCC materials, demonstration, 
  • Installed school latrine in consultation with school management committees (SMCs) and public latrines in consultation with concerned UPs;
  • Showed popular UNICEF Meena and other educational videos at community level and schools/institutions;
  • Showed live drama with functional messages related to sanitation at public places;
  • Moreover, regular coordination, communication, follow up, facilitation of workshops, meeting, case and facts presentation associated to achieve the success where funding agency/donors expressed their full satisfaction. 
  • Development or re-printing of available Climate change and WASH focus IEC/BCC materials
  • Hygiene promotion and Climate change awareness and adaptation activities in communities, schools 
  • Hygiene promotion activities in communities, schools
  • Distribution of hygiene kits in necessary cases
  • Special sessions for adolescent girls in communities on menstrual hygiene

 

Summary results:

  • Working in 70 Union Parishads, installed so far 600 water points and 05 Public/Institutional latrines based on community demands
  • Formal training to 1,400 Local Government functionaries
  • Hygiene and sanitation promotion for 800,000 people including school children
